2010 College Football Preview: The Question Game, Part 1

Will Alabama and Nick Saban win back-to-back national championships? Will Boise State meet Alabama in Arizona on January 10th? Will Ohio State, Florida, Oregon, or Georgia play in the national championship game? Will Rich Rodriguez survive this season at Michigan? These are just some of the many questions heading into the college football season. Let's play the question game.

Could Navy Quarterback Ricky Dobbs actually be an Heisman candidate this year?: This isn't a gimmick to promote my favorite college football team. Dobbs is the real deal. Dobbs rushed for over 1,200 yards last year and even more impressively passed for 1,000 yards in a traditional running offense. The Midshipmen return three starters from the offensive line and the leading receiver. It isn't hard to expect Dobbs putting up greater numbers this season as Navy rolls off another nine to ten wins.

If you could only watch one non-conference game this year, which one would it be?: In just the first weekend of the year we have LSU vs. North Carolina (Atlanta), TCU vs. Oregon State (Jerry World), and Boise State vs. Virginia Tech (Washington D.C.). The next weekend we have Penn State at Alabama, Miami at Ohio State, and Florida State at Oklahoma. Quite the group to choose between. I still have to go with Boise State vs. Virginia Tech just because of the national title implications this game holds.

Which conference game would you choose?: Just on October 2nd alone we have Florida at Alabama and the Red River Shootout between Oklahoma and Texas. I would have to go with Florida at Alabama to watch the rubber match between the two teams that have won the past two national championships. Then you have games like Texas at Nebraska, Ohio State at Wisconsin, and Oregon at Oregon State games that could decide conference champions. Tough games to choose between.

Can Tommy Tuberville keep Texas Tech relevant?: Say what you want about Mike Leach's coaching methods and offense, he made Texas Tech relevant. They may not have had the best teams, but you were always interested to watch their games because his offense was so explosive. Leach was fired and the former Auburn and Ole Miss coach Tommy Tuberville was hired. Tuberville lead Auburn to an undefeated season, they should have split the national title with USC, but was eventually fired. Tuberville is a good coach, but the Big XII is deep and big time talent won't want to go to Lubbock when they could go to Oklahoma and Texas. Also the same offense won't be ran with Tuberville. Tommy is used to more of an traditional offense and I have a feeling we will see that traditional offense by mid-season. So my guess, Texas Tech won't stay relevant with Tuberville as the coach.

Is Oregon still the favorite to win the Pac-10?: Losing Jeremiah Masoli was huge for Oregon. They lost a potential Heisman candidate and the perfect quarterback for Chip Kelly's offense. Oregon does return a loaded offense and a defense with great speed. Oregon should be the Pac-10 favorites because USC is ineligible to play in a bowl game and Stanford, Oregon State, and California all have bigger issues than Oregon.

Will the Notre Dame defense improve under Brian Kelly?: The defense at Notre Dame during the Charlie Weis years were horrendous. Last year alone they gave up an average of 397.8 yards a game. Brian Kelly is now the coach and he's changing the defense. Kelly is moving to the Irish to a 3-4 defense is take advantage of the deepest position of the team, linebackers. Kelly's teams though are known for terrible defenses. His Cincinnati defense last year gave up over 400 yards and 39 points a game. With Kelly's track record, I don't see how the Notre Dame defense will improve.

Is this the final year for Joe Paterno at Penn State?: Yeah, yeah I know we've talked about this for the past 20 years, but the question has to be asked again. Is this Joe Paterno's last year at Penn State? The media was obsessed with Paterno's health during the Big 11 10 media day. Hearing him speak at the media day, I have to say I'm concerned about his health. He didn't sound or look like he should be out of his house let alone coaching. Then you factor in the fact he hasn't done any actual recruiting for three years and how much he actually coaches makes you wonder. I think Paterno retires after the season after his son convinces him too.
