The Roundup 3/2/2010

The Roundup is a new feature debuting today on KSJ. I look at various news and notes in a specific sport and make some smart ass comment to go along with them. Sound simple enough? Let's start with college basketball for this week.

Steve Alford Is Still a Jerk
New Mexico coach Steve Alford was reprimanded by the Mountain West Conference for his heated exchanged of words with BYU player Jonathan Tavernari. Of course Alford is a Bobby Knight guy, he thinks he did nothing wrong. "It happened in a competitive nature," Alford said. "I don't think there's any harm done." Of course this video says differently.

Emotional Day in Kansas
Tonight is Senior Night for the University of Kansas and one particular player. Sherron Collins will play his last game at the Allen Fieldhouse. Collins won a National Championship with Kansas during the 2008 season and has a real good chance to win another National Championship this year. Collins has also won the most games as a Jayhawk in a four-year span in the entire history of that school. It will definitely be an emotional night in Lawrence for Collins, "I try not to think about it, but it is hard not to. I wish I could run from it, but I can't. I wish I had more time to play here. I am trying to figure out if I am going to cry like a baby after the game, but I try to joke a lot and to stay happy."

Too Bad You Can't Watch Sherron Collins' Last Home Game
Yep that's right, you probably won't be able to watch the Kansas-Kansas State game on TV. The game will be broadcast on the Big XII Network, which only reaches 8 of the top 50 markets. You will still be able to watch the game on ESPN 360, but watching a game on a stream is not something I particularly desire. How this game is not going to be broadcast on a major network is beyond me. It's the only match up of the last week for the college basketball regular season that feature's two top-5 teams. There is only on the line a potential number 1 seed riding on this game.

It's Okay Being a Loser
There is only one team in the entire nation that doesn't have at least one conference win and it's the Fordham Rams. Fordham hasn't won a conference game since January 28, 2009 against Saint Bonaventure. Fordham has lost 24 straight conference games. They do have a chance to finish the season with a conference win, but don't get too excited since they have to play Xavier and Duquesne. This isn't the first time a college basketball team has gone win less in conference. DePaul, Air Force, and Southeast Missouri all went win less last year in conference. In fact there has only been three seasons in the past 20, where at least one team went win less in conference.

Need An Excuse To Watch The NCAA Tournament?
Need a good excuse to stay home and watch the first weekend of the NCAA tournament? The Oregon Urology Institute for the third straight year has suggested that men get a vasectomy for they can take time off work for the NCAA tournament. I prefer faking an illness, but whatever works, right?

Note: Tell me what you think of this new feature.

  1. Thank God for MASN as they'll have the K-State/Kansas game tomorrow night. With that & Duke/Maryland it'll be a great night of hoops tomorrow.

  2. I'll have an open thread up tomorrow for the games.

  3. Alford stood by Pierre Pierce and his many, many transgressions at Iowa, but Tavernari's an asshole? Tavernari was lucky Alford didn't try to "reposition" him. BYU players are used to getting grabbed.

BTW, like the new feature, Keith.
