College Football Open Thread: Orange Bowl

Posted by JFein because 49er16's CPU is still with the Geek Squad

FedEx Orange Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. Iowa 8:00 (Fox - Dick Stockton and Charles Davis, SR: Chris Myers and Laura Okmin)

JFein's pick: Georgia Tech. I do not see Iowa being able to stop Tech's triple option.

I must say that I eagerly anticipate a confused discussion from Dick Stockton and Charles Davis about the clock stopping after a first down as they reset the chains...

  1. GT will win in a rout.

The best thing about this game is going to be Stockton. This could one of the all time greats...

    ReplyDelete
  2. Go Hawks! (Although GT will probably win this game handily)

    ReplyDelete
  3. Take a drink when either Stockton or Davis say anything in particular that doesn't right. You'll be drunk by the middle of the 1st quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I wonder if we will meet any other cummunications majors tonight....

    ReplyDelete
  5. And, not a good start for the Hawkeyes, as we give it up on the first possession.

    ReplyDelete
  6. "Loses the ball and Georgia Tech may have it back." - Dick Stockton

First off, by the time he said Georgia Tech may have it it was obvious that they did recover it and secondly, have it BACK, Dick? Georgia Tech kicked off to start the game. They never had it in the first place!

    ReplyDelete
  7. And, we escape the threat and get the ball back. Touchback takes it to the 20.

    ReplyDelete
  8. These teams' colors just do not look right at an Orange Bowl....

    ReplyDelete
  9. The last time Iowa played in the Orange Bowl, Carson Palmer destroyed them.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Sensational run! First down Iowa!

    ReplyDelete
  11. TOUCHDOWN! Iowa has the early lead in the Orange Bowl!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well then. That was a slightly unexpected start to this game...

    ReplyDelete
  13. @49er16 How was RAW last night, the parts I didn't spoil? /Sarcasm'd

    ReplyDelete
  14. "We have double barrel coverage on the sideline." - Dick Stockton

    Huh?

    ReplyDelete
  15. GT going for it on fourth and short... nope. Timeout Jackets.

    ReplyDelete
  16. "Georgia Tech's spread offense has not gained much." - Dick Stockton

One problem: Georgia Tech employs the triple option, not the spread.

    ReplyDelete
  17. And, with GT's plan to draw Iowa offsides having failed, a rare punt for the Yellow Jackets.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I loved RAW lat night, even the parts you spoiled Al :-)

    ReplyDelete
  19. @JFein "We have double barrel coverage on the sideline"

I think Dick combined and/or mixed up the baseball (double barrel in the bullpen) and football (double coverage) sayings.

I'm watching college hoops so I'm just guessing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @ Al: Little would you know by that quote, he was referring to the fact that there are 2 sideline reporters this game, the ubiquitous Chris Myers and Laura Okmin.

I only figured that out because he sent it down to Myers immediately afterwards, otherwise I would have been completely clueless.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Right now GT seems as ill-prepared for this BCS game as Fox.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @49er16 That's good. I was sort of dissapointed there wasn't a double-cross by Vince, Shawn, or Bret to make it entertaining. Hornswaggle acting a pitbull/attack dog was the most entertaining thing of the show.

@JFein Sixers hosting the Wizards and up 78-75 after having an 18-point lead at one point.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 80-78 Sixers after 3 in The Battle of Ineptitude.

    ReplyDelete
  24. GT has blown their load.

    /BCS on FOX'd

  25. Vince in New HampshireJanuary 5, 2010 at 5:54 PM

Did anybody see Stockton's pink underwear in pre-game discussions?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Eh, Dick, that Penn State-Florida State Orange Bowl was not exactly an exciting game. It was a boring defensive struggle that just so happened to go 3 OTs and have a good finish.

    ReplyDelete
  27. According to some folks on Twitter, Dick Stockton pronounced the "s" in Des Moines.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Josh Nesbitt should just give up quarterbacking. Now.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @JFein I guessed there may have been 2 sideline reporters, I thought I read that somewhere. Why wouldn't Fox have 2 sideline reporters at undefeated Boise St./undefeated TCU last night?

I could care less about this, at least the Fiesta Bowl winner could claim we're undefeated and deserve consideration for the national title.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Absolutely NOTHING going right for GT on that drive. Punt coming.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Pick 6 by the Yellow Jackets! The momentum may have just shifted on that one!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yep, Ricky Stanzi is back all right.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @ Al: I don't know. I guess Laura Okmim must follow Stockton and Davis all the time. It makes no sense why they do it for the most unappealing of the 3 Fox BCS games.

"You can see their fans subdued now." - Dick Stockton talking about the Iowa fans.

Does someone have money on the Yellow Jackets tonight?

Maybe this actually will be an exciting game after all. 14-7 Iowa after a GT pick 6.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Decent kickoff return as we near the end of the quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I give full license for Stockton/Davis ripping tonight because we're stuck w/ them all NFL season and they don't have a lot of redeeming qualities.

I actually did think Stockton was good until he lost it though but let it rip.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The Reese's Perfect Ending showcased the 07 Fiesta Bowl ending? Why? What was the point of that other than to say "Haha, we broadcast that game and you didn't". This is the Orange Bowl, not the Fiesta Bowl, and neither Boise State nor Oklahoma are playing in this game.

As sad of an admission as this is, I actually liked Thom's calls of the big plays in that game....

    ReplyDelete
  37. Stockton was good.......in the 80's.

    ReplyDelete
  38. BREAKING NEWS: Mike Shannahan has agreed to a 5 year deal with the Redskins, becoming their head coach and VP of football operations

    ReplyDelete
  39. I never was a Stockton fan. Ever. So while I might contain myself on some legends turned too old such as Pat Summerall and Dick Enberg on football and college basketball, Stockton gets no mercy from me.

And Mangina Davis is just useless.

    ReplyDelete
  40. "What a half of football Tarrant has had." - Charles Davis at the end of the 1st quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  41. WILL DICK STOCKTON SHUT UP ABOUT THE COLD!!!!! 50 DEGREES IS NOT THAT BAD!!!!!!!!

Who cares if it is the coldest Orange Bowl ever because the game is in Miami and it's never cold there? 50 degree nights are not actually cold nights.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Scott Of course, I turn on the Caps game why is that on CSN Plus, never mind Iverson is playing for Philly and Beninati reads a promo for a Jim Zorn interview and then says "Locker, we're hearing a five-year deal between Mike Shanahan and the Redskins."

If I'm watching hockey...I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE DEADSKINS!!!!! God forbid, I can't go through the offseason w/out hearing about them.

    ReplyDelete
  43. And, the Iowa defense holds again.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Dick Stockton is speaking as if it was 12 degrees outside. It's 48.

    So so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  45. And, someone just lost a shoe.

    ReplyDelete
  46. And, here comes our first review of the night.

    ReplyDelete
  47. @JFein I want to know what Stockton is thinking too, it's a little cool for Miami but it isn't Memphis during the Liberty Bowl on Saturday. That was cold.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @ Al: At least it is good to see that the Eagles are not the only team I know of whose head coach is both the head coach and the VP of football operations.

    /Andy Reid'd

    ReplyDelete
  49. And, the pass is ruled incomplete. Good call there.

    ReplyDelete
  50. And, Iowa is going backwards. 3rd and 20 coming.

Stanzi pressured and is forced to throw it away. Punt forthcoming by the Hawks.

    ReplyDelete
  51. GT needs to stick with that outside option play.

    ReplyDelete
  52. @Vince I think Shanahan as the head coach and Bruce Allen as the GM are great choices, they've had success before and they KNOW football. Cerrato and Zorn are clueless.

Add the football moves to the Caps beating Monteal and the Wizards coming from behind to defeat Philly tonight...I'm in sports heaven for a day.

I might call the football team by their real name, the Redskins!

    ReplyDelete
  53. And, yet another punt coming up by GT.

And, a delay of game backs them up 5 yards.

    ReplyDelete
  54. ESPN Homecoming w/ Rick Reilly hosting, tonight's guest is Chris Paul.

Chances of ESPN doing a homecoming of an NHL player...NO CHANCE IN HELL!!!! /Vince McMahon'd

    ReplyDelete
  55. 3-and-out for Iowa as GT's defense appears to be getting their act together.

Now let's see if the offense can do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Kool and the Gang??? Is Fox serious?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Baseball comparisons are not Charles Davis' thing.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Davis explaining a rule (illegal touch) that any football fan would know and is not complicated. This isn't icing in hockey.

    ReplyDelete
  59. @JFein I hope Kool and the Gang plays "Celebration" during halftime, it's the same thing I'll do once Fox's BCS reign ends after this game.

    ReplyDelete
  60. You don't like disco bands JFein?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Turnover on downs, not that it matters much, as there's only 12 seconds remaining in the half.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hell Yeah! Cool and the Gang!

    BCS on FOX SUCKS

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love how's their no crowd noise during the halftime. Do you think the crowd knows there's actually a band called Kool and the Gang?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yet another penalty on GT.

    ReplyDelete
  65. FG is no good, still 14-7 Iowa.

    ReplyDelete
  66. First field goal attempt of the night is... NO GOOD! GT wastes a good drive and keeps it at 14-7 Iowa.

    ReplyDelete
  67. at least Stockton still has the score right

    ReplyDelete
  68. @Vince

Zorn was basically fired after the week 3 loss in Detroit. That was abysmal because people in D.C. talked all week before that the Lions had a legit chance to beat the Skins.

The MNF debacle against the Giants was Zorn giving up. The fake field goal at the end of the 1st half would've have Verne Lundquist yelling "WHAT ARE THEY DOING???" if he was calling the game.

Zorn was a bad hire to start off. Good riddance.

    ReplyDelete
  69. @kt Congratulations to Dick, he's learning. See miracles do happen!

I'm sorry that was too good to let go without a joke. BTW, another boring game lacking offense.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Davis saying Kirk Ferentz got his big start as an assitant coaching the offensive line (I heard the same thing on D.C. radio when they were discussing HC options if Shanahan refused). Wow, great note, who says FOX doesn't do prepwork. /Sarcasm'd

That's my Charles Davis cheapshot of the night.

    ReplyDelete
  71. i forgot ACC football blew chunks. inexcusable on my part after watching it for most of the fall.

@Al well good luck w/Shanahan getting the final call on players. i'm not sure what in his history w/ Denver suggests he knows what he's doing in this regard.

    ReplyDelete
  72. No, I am not a fan of disco music.

And wait? What's this? A team in the RedZone this game? I never knew such a thing was possible?

    ReplyDelete
  73. @kt I sure as hell didn't watch ACC football this fall, of course half the games were avaiable only on ESPN360.com's paid service.

    ReplyDelete
  74. "Iowa has not won a major bowl game since the 1991 Rose Bowl"-Stockton.

Actually, they didn't even win that one. Iowa lost to Washington 46-34

Meanwhile, it's now 17-7 Hawkeyes on the FG.

    ReplyDelete
  75. @JFein "RedZone", are you talking about NFL RedZone? /Sarcasm'd

And a great gold medal game at the World Junior Hockey Championship just ended. I have no NHL Network, so no access. I won't give away what happened.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Huh. Stockton actually corrected his error. Didn't expect that.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Does Dick Stockton have any idea at all about college football? He has been as clueless as I feared that he would be in this game.

    ReplyDelete
  78. NHL network questioner to the guy that scored the winning goal:"Is that the biggest goal you've ever scored in your career?"

What a dumbass question IMO to a 17 year old....

and i didn't give away who scored it...

    ReplyDelete
  79. @Scott I think Dick just corrected that and major bowl games exclude obviously the Cap One Bowl when they beat LSU in 2005 on Tate's pass to Holloway. I still hear Gary Thorne yelling in my head (in a good way) when I think about that play.

    ReplyDelete
  80. i keep waiting for Stockton to start telling stories Grandpa Simpson style...

    ReplyDelete
  81. @kt Good job not spoiling it (We're learning, okay, me). Bad question by the reporter, of course it's the biggest goal that player has scored.

Where's SS Reporters when we need him?

    ReplyDelete
  82. @Al yeah, that was a great ending...hopefully the gold medal game in 6 weeks is as good...and has the same ending!

and i completely passed on CSN tonight...don't want to hear 20 minutes on the Deadskins instead of the team that actually made the playoffs...

    ReplyDelete
  83. "I'm John Bolaris. When are we going to catch a break from the Polar Express?" - awful Philadelphia weatherman John Bolaris.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I'm not a Redskins fan, but from my observations of Campbell is that there is no hope for him. Too much inconsistency at the coaching position throughout his career has pretty much ruined any chance he has at being an elite QB in the NFL.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Yellow Jackets back in the game!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Touchdown Georgia Tech! And we have a close football game in Miami!

    ReplyDelete
  87. @kt I wish Grandpa Simpson and the Simpsons were on FOX right now.

Is Vince only asking questions to me tonight and not commenting on anything else? I don't get it.

I think they won't bring back Campbell. He's okay but not a west-coast offense QB like Shanahan usually wants. BTW, Tech touchdown.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Touchdown GT! 17-14 and to quote ESPN's John Anderson, the cheese is starting to bind a little.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Scott, please don't quote John Anderson. I like him as much as JFein likes Dick Stockton, I don't.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Iowa w/ a couple of big plays to get into Tech territory.

    ReplyDelete
  91. @ Vince: How the hell would I or any other person specifically remember that game??????

    ReplyDelete
  92. That stalled very quickly. Why pass Iowa?

    ReplyDelete
  93. thats a huge pick

yes Dick, thats "a critical one"

    ReplyDelete
  94. INTERCEPTED!!!! IOWA HAS A CHANCE TO PUT THIS GAME AWAY!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  95. @JFein and Vince I know Spurrier decided to throw about 50 times even though Stephen Davis was our running back at that time.

Steve Czaban from ESPN980 wouldn't let that play-calling debacle go for a few years, it was a running joke. The Skins demise started when Dan Snyder became the owner.

Bad throw by Nesbitt is picked off.

    ReplyDelete
  96. INTERCEPTION! GT gives it right back on the first play, and Iowa can put it away with a touchdown!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Let's see...Redskins, Jaguars, game in 2002, unexciting game, oh gee, I don't know why on earth I would forget such a thing.......

/Logic with trolls really is futile, isn't it guys?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Unnecessary roughness on Tech! Steve Shaw's mic is as good as Tracy Wolfson's during the Gator Bowl, not good.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Oh man! Robinson slipped and may have just cost Iowa a chance to seal this thing.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Fake!?!

    WTF is Ferentz thinking?

    ReplyDelete
  101. @JFein I had a feeling we had a troll, insane obession for Redskins Football from a guy in New Hampshire.

The Iowa receiver falls down or that would've been a TD.

    ReplyDelete
  102. GT just caught a huge break there. If that reciever keeps his balance, this game's all but over.

And, the fake FG goes for naught. GT keeps it a 3-point game. HUGE break for the Yellow Jackets on that drive.

    ReplyDelete
  103. A FAKE FIELD GOAL???? WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT???? FORCE GEORGIA TECH TO SCORE A TOUCHDOWN ON YOU, INSTEAD OF GIVING THEM A CHANCE TO TIE THE GAME WITH A FIELD GOAL!!!!!!!

    Unbelievable!

    ReplyDelete
  104. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING??? MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!

    /Verne Lundquist'd

    ReplyDelete
  105. Was Ferentz doing his best Pat Fitzgerald impersonation?

As Verne Lundquist would say "WHAT ARE THEY DOING?????"

    ReplyDelete
  106. WOW! QB got out of jail big time there! That was a sure safety!

    ReplyDelete
  107. of course, with the way Iowa's been playing D, it may have not have been such an insane call

    ReplyDelete
  108. And that's the Allstate Good Hands Play of the Game?

    Nothing was good about that.

FOX can go away from college football now.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Can Josh Nesbitt please stop trying to impersonate a quarterback?

    Oh, wait...

    ReplyDelete
  110. Maybe Ferentz knew Tech couldn't drive the length of the field, 3 and out.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Waiting for WJC highlights on ESPN Sportscenter, why I don't know but Tirico and Gruden (guessing they're the ESPN radio crew for Thursday's game ) are in Pasadena previewing the BCS Championship game tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  112. I meant Thursday, Steve Levy's favorite bowl, the GMAC is Wednesday.

    ReplyDelete
  113. They give the FedEx ground performance of the game to a guy whose biggest highlight of the game was a 1-yard touchdown run???

The end of Fox's BCS coverage can't come soon enough.....

    ReplyDelete
  114. @ Al: It really would figure that Steve Levy ended up calling that Marshall-ECU GMAC Bowl.....

    ReplyDelete
  115. 1st down to Strauss! Scott rejoices!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I'm pretty sure that every game that guy ever called turned out to be an instant classic....

    ReplyDelete
  117. Timeout Georgia Tech, as we have 2:43 remaining on FOX's BCS run.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Just a suggestion, being that it seems like there are a LOT of unwanted comments posted. Why not require anybody that posts to have a Blogger ID?

    //Most Brilliant Suggestion'd Thus Far in 2010

    ReplyDelete
  119. WEGHER!!! TO THE GEORGIA TECH 30!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  120. @JFein He brings that game up, well he doesn't say specifically, but he's done that every night since the New Years Day bowls ended. He is very annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  121. NICE run by #3!

2:03 to go and GT calls its second TO.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Scott then has to get a Blogger ID.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Unbelievable...

    Iowa's going to win

    ReplyDelete
  124. WEGHER!!!! TOUCHDOWN IOWA!!!! THEY ARE 1:56 AWAY FROM AN ORANGE BOWL TITLE!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  125. Wegher to the endzone to clinch the game for Iowa! Tech doesn't look like they can score 10 points in 1:30.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Or don't. Remain losers! Live Blog! Drink!

    ReplyDelete
  127. "Everyone was talking about Paul Johnson and that spread offense." - Dick Stockton

Do I really need to say anything?

And nice job of Charles Davis of leaving his partner out to dry on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Well, we seem to have this one in the bag, so I'm off to watch some Conan and hit the sack. See ya guys for the BCS Title game live blog Thursday.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Thankfully, Stockton and Davis are done for this season.

    ReplyDelete
  130. MERCIFULLY, THE BCS ON FOX IS FINALLY OVER!!!!

And some excited yelp about Iowa upsetting Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl...

    ReplyDelete
  131. No need to remind me or laugh at me. I know I am awful at picking games....

    ReplyDelete
